Message in a Bottle

The one bottle you won't be throwing into the sea!

Lions Clubs Message in a Bottle is a simple but effective way for people to keep their basic personal and medical details where they can be found in an emergency on a standard form and in a common location – the fridge.

More than 6 million Message in a Bottle kits have been distributed by Lions Clubs British Isles in recent years to people with conditions such as diabetes, allergies, disabilities and life-threatening illnesses.

A message in a Bottle kit can be supplied to anyone who has a condition which could lead to them becoming unconscious and they are available in local health centres, doctors’ surgeries and chemists.

These bottles are provided FREE of charge by our club thanks to the generous donations we receive from varioius events which we organise throughout the year.

So how does it work?

Message in a Bottle helps emergency services personnel to save valuable time in identifying an individual very quickly and knowing if they have any allergies or take special medication.

The Message in a Bottle kit includes a form, where personal and medical information is detailed. This is placed in the distinctive bottle which is stored in the fridge. Why the fridge?  Simply as that is considered a household item which exists in most houses these days.

Two stickers are provided: one for the fridge (or other cupboard) door and the other for inside of the front door of the premises.   It is important to stress that this is INSIDE the front door to ensure that bypassers do not receive any 'hint' that the resident may be frail or otherwise vulnerable.

Paramedics, police, fire-fighters and social services support this Lions life-saving initiative and on entering the property, will check behind the door, see that the Message in a Bottle is present and head to the kitchen to find the bottle, the location of which will be easily seen thanks to the second sticker supplied with the kit.

It is not just vulnerable people who benefit from Message in a Bottle. Anyone with health conditions could have an accident at home which renders them unconscious and this initiative provides peace of mind that prompt and appropriate medical assistance can be provided, and next of kin / emergency contacts can be notified.

If you, or any of your family or friends, fall into the category described, why not pop into the doctors surgery or pharmacy and pick up your free bottle.
